What is a Virtual Interview?

Learn how to conduct yourself for a virtual interview

Virtual interviews are job interviews conducted digitally over the internet. They can occur during a live video call or be conducted through recorded videos, with predetermined questions.

 

Virtual interviews are done remotely, unlike face-to-face interviews. This saves time and money for both candidates and recruiters. The duration can last from 15 minutes to over an hour. This depends on the job's level and the interview requirements.  

Virtual interviews often take place over video calling systems like Zoom, Skype or Microsoft Teams. Some companies may use specialised video interview platforms instead. Interviewers normally use them early on in the recruiting process to screen candidates quickly and easily. Online interviews usually lead to in-person interviews for candidates who do well, unless the job is fully remote.  

A virtual interview means that non-verbal communication can be more difficult. Body language and eye contact are important for building rapport during interviews, and remote work calls can hinder this. However, there are positives with virtual interviews.

Advantages of virtual interviews  

Virtual interviews allow you to interview from the comfort of your own home, without needing to travel to and find an office. It can also be easier to implement accessibility requirements. This includes automatic closed captioning, longer interview times, or flexible scheduling.  

Live interviews have many of the benefits of face-to-face interviews. They allow a natural conversation to develop and you can thoroughly explain your experience.

Online skills assessments can systematically test candidates in skills like writing, logic, or coding as part of the screening process.  

Asynchronous interviews are convenient. They allow you to record responses at your convenience, and you can plan exactly what you want to say in advance. This is especially helpful if you tend to panic when put on the spot.  

Tips for virtual interviews  

To make your interview as successful as possible, here are some things to consider:  

  • Treat it as a normal interview and prepare accordingly. Be ready to talk about your experience and skills, research the company, and prepare interview questions of your own to ask the interviewer.  
  • Make sure you have a reliable internet connection and have downloaded and familiarised yourself with any necessary software.  
  • Find a quiet place to take the call and ensure your background is professional and appropriate.  
  • Log on early so that if any technical problems come up, you can manage them without being late.
