When to Change a Job

Spot the signs to know when you're ready to change your job

It can be hard to know when to change jobs. Is that burnout just because you’re craving a holiday?

Are you getting cold feet following a new, scary project assignment? Or are you just ready to move on to a better work-life balance? While everyone is different, here are some key signs that it’s time to change careers for the short term and long term.

When you should change your job

If work is all-consuming and no longer brings you pleasure or job satisfaction, you should consider if it is worth staying. Maybe your friends and family have noticed a change in your behaviour and suggested leaving. Your work shouldn’t feel monotonous or stagnant. Ideally, you should consistently face challenges and find fulfillment without feeling overwhelmed.

Sometimes a job isn’t the right fit anymore, as you may outgrow the job responsibilities or environment. Perhaps you feel stuck and have realised you want to pursue a different career path, or your role isn’t what you hoped it would be. Your personal life may also mean your job is no longer convenient and doesn't provide a healthy work-life balance. The commute may have become too much, you want a job with more flexible hours, or you would prefer a nicer work environment.

The company culture can have a huge impact on your well-being. Many people spend a third of their lives at work. Therefore, it's important you get on with your coworkers, feel included, and agree with your company’s values. Consider things like whether you'd like to work from home to ensure that you're meeting your own needs.

If you feel overlooked or not appreciated, you might be missing out on promotions you deserve. Think about joining a company that values your contributions and supports your mental health.

Tips for changing jobs

While there are jobs available year-round, the best time of year to change jobs is often from January to the spring season. The job market offers the most opportunities then. But you're also likely to have the most competition with other job seekers.

If you have decided to leave, don't ignore your relationships with team members. Also, make sure you keep the quality of your work high. Often, the interviewing process involves references, so maintaining strong connections will stand you in good stead.

Lastly, when job searching, keep in mind the factors that are making you leave your current job. Avoid landing yourself in the same position by being aware of your key career goals and expectations.
