What is a Labourer Job?

Explore a new way of working

Labourer jobs are an excellent way to enter the construction industry or a trade.

Some labour job examples include cleaning up excess materials, moving things around a site, digging trenches, assisting scaffolders, helping manage material inventories and some administrative tasks. Working on a construction site can also provide opportunities for progression into other industrial trades.

How to get a labouring job

Manual labour jobs broadly don’t require a lot of skills or formal education. However, they can offer opportunities to gain new skills and work experience. Some college courses, such as Construction Skills or Construction Operations, can help when entering into labourer roles or help workers to advance faster.

Have a CSCS labourer card

You will also need a CSCS labourer card to work as a labourer on construction sites. CSCS cards are legally required for everyone involved in an on-site construction work role, and labourers are no exception.

Complete necessary courses

The Green Labourer card is usually appropriate, which requires completion of a CITB Health, Safety and Environment Operative test. You can take these tests at centres across the country. They usually take 45 minutes to answer multiple-choice questions. After you pass the test, you will need to complete a Health, Safety & Awareness (HS&A) course.

CSCS recognise many different courses for this purpose. Some courses will take less time to finish. However, they may expire after a while. This means you will need to take a refresher course.

After you complete both courses, you can apply for the CSCS Green Card.

Have good physical fitness

Working as a labourer often requires good physical fitness. You will likely lift heavy objects or materials on the job.

Be punctual and co-operative

Labourers must be on time and arrive for their scheduled hours. They should work well under pressure. They also need to cooperate with their team to reach a common goal.

ACS Staffing Solutions has an amazing range of jobs available right now, among many other fantastic opportunities. Take a look at our available roles.
